Hair regrowth works best when treatment matches the cause of hair loss. Pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, and inflammatory scarring alopecias are different diseases and require different approaches.

Androgenetic Alopecia — Male & Female Pattern Hair Loss

Androgenetic alopecia causes gradual thinning as susceptible follicles produce progressively finer hairs.

Treatment may include:

  • Topical minoxidil
  • Low-dose oral minoxidil for selected patients
  • Finasteride for appropriate patients
  • Spironolactone for selected women
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
  • Low-level red light or laser therapy
  • Hair transplantation for selected patients

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune form of hair loss that may cause a few smooth patches or more extensive loss of scalp, eyebrow, eyelash, beard, or body hair.

Treatment may include:

  • Corticosteroid injections into affected areas
  • Topical corticosteroids
  • Minoxidil as an adjunct when appropriate
  • JAK inhibitors for more extensive disease, including Olumiant® (baricitinib), Litfulo® (ritlecitinib), and Leqselvi® (deuruxolitinib)

Inflammatory & Scarring Alopecias

Inflammatory and scarring alopecias can permanently damage follicles. The first goal is to control inflammation early and preserve follicles that are still viable.

Treatment may include:

  • High-potency topical corticosteroids
  • Corticosteroid injections into the scalp
  • Doxycycline or other anti-inflammatory antibiotics
  • Hydroxychloroquine or other systemic anti-inflammatory treatment when appropriate
  • Minoxidil to support growth from viable follicles
