Monitoring your skin can be difficult to do on your own, especially if you have multiple moles or if you need to check your back. You may have a spot on your back that’s growing or changing in color without you knowing! Visiting a dermatologist can help detect any irregularities on your skin, hair, and nails early on, and prevent serious conditions. Your provider can also recommend skincare products and lifestyle modifications to keep your skin healthy.
You can see a dermatologist from the time you are a baby and through all of adulthood for any skin concerns or conditions. However, if you have no existing skin conditions, it is recommended to start scheduling regular dermatology appointments around the age of 25. This is advised because of sun exposure and the importance of catching any suspicious skin growths early. However, you can see a dermatologist at any age if you have skin concerns or have skin concerns for your child.
Dermatologists diagnose and treat many different conditions of the skin, hair, and nails. The following list includes some of the most common reasons for a patient to see a dermatologist.

|
Most people don’t see a dermatologist until they have a skin concern or desire a cosmetic procedure. However, you should visit your dermatologist at least once a year for a thorough skin examination. If you develop any conditions between yearly visits, you should contact your dermatologist immediately.
Most people don’t wear sunscreen as often as they should. Simply, you should be applying sunscreen to your face and body all 365 days out of the year. It doesn’t matter if it’s raining, snowing, or cloudy, UV rays are still present and they can damage the skin. Make sure that you are using sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Our dermatologist can provide you with sunscreen recommendations if you’re not sure what kind is right for you.
We’re here to help! We offer many different options to treat acne, such as peels, prescriptions, extractions, and customized comprehensive treatment plans. We also offer cryofacials, light therapy, and lasers to heal and prevent breakouts. Cortisone shots are also a great quick fix!
Yes – skin cancer screenings are a fundamental aspect of our practice and are proven to detect skin cancers early on. All of our providers are skilled at skin cancer screenings and detections.
Everyone can benefit from an annual skin cancer screening. Since you’re already visiting your dermatologist once a year for a checkup, this is also the perfect time to get screened for skin cancer. This examination only takes a few minutes, and it could save your life. Those who have a family history of skin cancer or other risk factors may want to talk with us about coming in more than once a year for a skin cancer screening.
If your provider determines it suspicious, they’ll most likely complete a biopsy, which is when the lesion is removed for a microscope pathologic examination. If it turns out to be cancerous, they will most likely advise additional treatment to make sure all the cancerous cells are removed.
As a general rule of thumb, we say to plan for 1 hour; however, this all depends on what treatment you are doing, if numbing is used, and/or if you are a first-timer or a regular patient. We will always do our best if you need to be out of your appointment at a certain time. Just let us know at the beginning of your appointment.
There are numerous types of fillers. The type of filler you may need depends on which area you would like injected and the desired effect. You will be able to discuss a customized plan with your provider at the time of your consultation.
Yes, we offer Botox®, Xeomin and Dysport toxins for patients who are looking to minimize or reverse wrinkle formation.
At Borealis Dermatology, we offer neurotoxin treatments to help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in a way that looks natural. Our team will advise you about your procedure and help you make an informed choice regarding your treatment.
You should refrain from drinking alcohol at least 3 days in advance or consuming aspirin or other blood thinners- Advil, Aleve, or Motrin – at least 7 days in advance as this may make you more susceptible to bruises.
You may take Tylenol if you have headaches or body aches, but avoid Advil, Aleve, or Motrin.
We recommend giving yourself at least two weeks before attending a major event for the skin to recover.
Bruising and swelling depends on skin type and area of injection, but normally bruising and swelling can last anywhere from 3-7 days.
There are a few things you can do. We suggest refraining from taking blood thinners (ibuprofen or aspirin) for 7 days prior to your appointment. Alcohol and caffeine are also blood thinners, so if you are worried about bruising try to refrain from consuming either of those for three days prior to your treatment. There are also some natural remedies shown to help reduce bruising like arnica and bromelain, which you can find at most health food stores. Take these for 2 days before and after treatment.
Don’t plan any beach vacations or outdoor activities for at least two weeks after your treatment, where there will be significant sun exposure.
Stop the use of any retinols, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and / or hydroquinone one week prior to your treatment.
Discuss with your provider the post-treatment instructions to ensure that you are prepared to optimize your recovery and treatment results.
Microinfusion is the process of stamping a combination of products such as fillers, wrinkle relaxers, skin brighteners, and/or vitamins into your skin, which improves your overall skin quality. Your provider will customize the combination of products based on your skin’s needs.
Microneedling is a procedure in which we create micro injuries in the skin to boost collagen production, assist cell turnover, and allow potent products to penetrate deeper into your skin. This results in a glowing, smooth, and firm skin, and can reduce acne scars and wrinkles.
The overwhelming majority of our treatments are considered non-invasive and have very little, to no downtime associated with them. In most cases you can return to your normal daily routine right away or within a few days. That said, it’s very important to note that recovery time is highly dependent on what treatment you have and that every person’s body can respond differently to any given treatment.
Nonetheless, the following provides you a general idea of what the typical recovery time is for some of our most popular treatments.
*Again, please note that these are just general estimates, and that every patient’s experience will be a little different. Patients should discuss their treatment in detail with their provider
You can use a laser alone or in combination with our other treatments, such as peels, to improve skin discoloration, texture and to rejuvenate your face, neck, and chest. There are a few exceptions, however, so please let your client coordinator know which treatments you’d like so they can book accordingly.
Some treatments like HydraFacials can be performed during pregnancy, however, consultations are required prior to any elective procedures and all risks and benefits will be discussed.
