Diaper rash is a description, not a diagnosis. Irritation, yeast, bacterial infection, eczema, psoriasis, and less common conditions can all affect the diaper area.

The pattern usually points toward the cause and guides treatment. Barrier care is important in almost every case, while antifungal, antibacterial, or anti-inflammatory treatment is added only when the diagnosis supports it.

What Parents Should Know

Baby skin care illustration.

What are common causes?

  • Irritant diaper dermatitis
  • Candida (yeast) overgrowth
  • Contact allergy
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Psoriasis or other inflammatory skin disease

What can parents do at home?

Frequent diaper changes, gentle cleansing, air drying when practical, and a thick barrier ointment with zinc oxide or petrolatum often help uncomplicated irritant rash.

How can I recognize yeast?

Candida rash often involves the skin folds and may have small “satellite” bumps around the main rash. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and recommend antifungal treatment when needed.

When should I call the doctor?

Seek evaluation for fever, pus, blisters, ulcers, severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, blood, persistent rash despite good barrier care, or rash in a very young or medically fragile infant.
