Medical Dermatology Issues & Treatments

  • ABSCESS (BOILS). Boil is the non-medical term for an abscess. There are two main types of abscesses- furuncle and carbuncle. If an abscess is large or interfering with your lifestyle, you may need to have it drained. Abscess drainage is a minor procedure performed in an office, where the area is numbed and incised slightly to drain its content.

  • ACNE. Acne is a skin condition where your hair follicles or skin pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. When your acne becomes severe the cysts become inflamed, causing irritation and pain. Acne treatments vary depending on the severity of the acne.

  • ECZEMA. Atopic dermatitis or eczema is a skin condition that causes dry skin, rashes, and extreme itching leaving red blotches and blisters when scratched at. As a complex condition with no definitive cure, eczema treatments are primarily about managing the conditions to relieve the symptoms.

  • LIPOMA. Lipoma is a benign (noncancerous) lump made up of fat cells. Most lipomas are surgically removed with simple surgical excision.

  • PSORIASIS. Psoriasis is a skin condition that creates red patches of skin with white, flaky scales. It most commonly occurs on the elbows, knees, and trunk, but can appear anywhere on the body. Treatment options include prescription medications, biologics, and light therapy/phototherapy.

  • SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS. As a chronic form of eczema, seborrheic dermatitis can cause lasting damage to the hair follicles and hinder hair growth. After an evaluation, our doctor can prescribe a variety of treatments to help control your symptoms and alleviate your skin including prescription medications and topical corticosteroids.

Surgical And Procedural Dermatology

  • CRYOTHERAPY. Cryotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that freezes skin-surface-level lesions like skin tags and warts using liquid nitrogen. A precise spray of liquid nitrogen (LN2) destroys the lesions and helps save areas around the lesion or growth to reduce scarring.

  • ELECTRODESICCATION. Electrodesiccation is a minor procedure that heats the cells to remove their water content, destroying any signs of benign and/or precancerous growths. Great for treating benign skin growths, precancerous skin conditions (actinic keratosis), and low-risk superficial basal or squamous cell carcinoma.

  • MOLE REMOVAL. Mole removal is a type of procedure that removes bothersome, unattractive, and/or possibly cancerous moles. At Borealis Dermatology, two methods are used to remove a mole: shave removal and surgical excision.

  • SKIN CANCER TREATMENTS. Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer, affecting more than one million Americans every year. Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cells, and melanoma are the most common types of skin cancer. Regardless of the type, early detection is of utmost importance in treating and preventing the spread of these conditions. Treatments vary depending on the type and severity. Treatment options include Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Surgical Excision, Electrodesiccation, and Cryotherapy amongst others.
