PRP for Hair Loss

PRP for Hair Loss

The dermatologists and skin care experts at Borealis Dermatology in Long Island are dedicated to helping you feel secure in your own skin. We understand that hair loss can be embarrassing and unattractive, regardless of your age. It can make you look older than you actually are and draw attention away from other features of your face when there is balding.

Dr. Navin S. Arora can create a personalized PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment plan for you to help you combat existing hair loss and prevent it from getting worse. This minimally-invasive procedure is a proven method for hair restoration.

Our procedure is entirely natural and secure. To encourage the rejuvenation of hair follicles, your PRP therapy will include blood taken from your own body. The entire treatment is done in one of our cutting-edge offices in Syosset or Garden City, with Dr. Arora and his team of board-certified dermatologists taking your best interests into account every step of the way. How does Platelet-Rich-Plasma for Hair Loss Work?

At Borealis Dermatology, your PRP treatment offers a double benefit: it can promote new hair growth and help slow down any additional hair loss. The treatment involves injecting a high concentration of plasma from the patient’s own blood directly into the hair follicles.

Blood with a high concentration of platelets is taken from the patient, the plasma is then separated in a centrifuge, and the injection is then given in the areas around the scalp that need to be treated. The needle used is very thin, and most of our patients report very little pain. As the blood comes from the patient’s own body, there is no risk of complication or rejection.

PRP is a biological product; it is a portion of the plasma fraction of the blood with a relatively high platelet concentration. In order to treat hair loss from an arguably natural standpoint, many patients turn to Platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) therapy. The importance of this product with regards to combating hair loss lies in its components, specifically the presence of growth factors.

The PRP Process

PRP therapy involves a three-step process:

1. Your blood gets drawn from your arm. The blood then gets placed in a centrifuge, a device capable of separating your blood based on the different densities of its components.

2. After some time in the centrifuge, your blood is separated into three layers:

  1. Platelet-poor plasma
  2. Platelet-rich plasma
  3. Red blood cells

3. Platelet-rich plasma is injected via syringe into areas of the scalp where increased hair growth is necessary.

PRP Hair Restoration Results

PRP is a non-surgical, out-patient procedure with minimal downtime. The innovative and minimally-invasive treatment produces reliable and natural results. It can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with other hair-loss techniques. Patients should be aware that results may take time to show; usually, they will start to become visible after two to three months, and will be most noticeable around the six-month mark.

Am I a candidate for PRP?

Hair loss is a condition that can affect both men and women. PRP is a treatment that is very effective in helping to combat female pattern baldness and male pattern baldness. If you have mild to moderate hair loss and want to take control and improve your self-confidence, PRP may be right for you. During your consultation with Dr. Arora and his team, they will evaluate your condition and suggest the best treatment plan for you. If you have any additional questions or concerns they can be discussed when you visit our offices in Syosset or Garden City.
