Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy uses a controlled range of ultraviolet B light to treat selected skin conditions. Borealis offers stand-up whole-body narrowband UVB phototherapy at our Syosset and Bellerose offices.
What is narrowband UVB phototherapy?
During whole-body NB-UVB treatment, a patient stands in a medical light cabinet while a measured dose of UVB is delivered to the skin. The dose and treatment schedule are adjusted over time based on the condition, skin response and treatment protocol.
What conditions can NB-UVB treat?
NB-UVB is commonly used for psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo and other phototherapy-responsive inflammatory skin conditions. Whether it is appropriate depends on the diagnosis, extent of disease, prior treatment and other medical factors.
How often is treatment given?
Phototherapy is usually given as a series of treatments rather than a single session. Many protocols use treatment several times per week, with the dose adjusted gradually. The exact schedule and duration vary by diagnosis and response.
NB-UVB vs. Excimer laser treatment
Whole-body NB-UVB is useful when larger areas of skin need treatment. Excimer laser treatment delivers targeted UVB to smaller, localized areas. The best option depends on where and how extensive the condition is.
Safety and what to expect
Possible short-term effects include redness, dryness, itching or a sunburn-like reaction. The treatment plan should account for medications and products that increase light sensitivity as well as cumulative ultraviolet exposure. Protective measures and dose adjustments are used as appropriate during treatment.
Where is whole-body NB-UVB available?
Stand-up whole-body NB-UVB is available at our Syosset and Bellerose offices. Garden City offers targeted Excimer laser treatment rather than whole-body NB-UVB.
