Leg Veins

Evaluation of visible leg veins with cosmetic laser treatment for selected superficial vessels and referral when a vascular problem is suspected.

Visible leg veins can be cosmetic, but some vein patterns also deserve medical evaluation before treatment.

We look at whether the concern is small superficial vessels or something that may need a vascular specialist.

For appropriate cosmetic vessels, laser treatment may be one option.

Spider Veins and Visible Leg Veins

Visible leg veins are not all the same. Small superficial vessels, often called spider veins or telangiectasias, are usually a cosmetic concern. Larger varicose veins can be associated with venous reflux and may cause aching, heaviness, swelling, itching, or skin changes.

When should leg veins be medically evaluated?

Seek medical evaluation if you have significant pain, one-sided swelling, recurrent inflammation, ulcers, bleeding, sudden changes, or symptoms suggesting deeper venous disease. Larger symptomatic varicose veins may require evaluation by a vascular specialist rather than a cosmetic procedure alone.

How are spider veins treated?

Depending on vessel size, location, skin type, and available technology, selected superficial vessels may be treated with laser or other vascular treatments. Multiple sessions may be needed, and complete clearance cannot be guaranteed.

What are the risks?

Temporary redness, bruising, swelling, and pigment changes can occur. Vascular treatments can also cause blistering, ulceration, scarring, or persistent discoloration in uncommon cases. Treatment parameters must be selected carefully, particularly in patients with darker skin tones.

Consultation first

Before treating visible leg vessels, it matters to distinguish cosmetic spider veins from symptoms that suggest a larger venous problem. Surface treatment is not a substitute for venous evaluation when swelling, pain, or other concerning symptoms are present.
