Need to be seen quickly? Same-day and next-day appointments may be available for a worsening or spreading rash. See our urgent dermatology appointments page or call (516) 246-8800.

A rash is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and guessing at it can delay the right treatment.

We start by listening to when it began, where it spread, what it feels like, recent exposures or medications, and what you have already tried.

Depending on the pattern, we may use examination, testing, biopsy, or a treatment trial to get to the cause and help settle it down.

How We Evaluate a Rash

When should a rash be evaluated?

See a dermatologist when a rash is persistent, rapidly spreading, recurrent, painful, significantly itchy, associated with fever, or not responding to reasonable home care.

When is it an emergency?

Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, widespread blistering or skin peeling, severe illness with a rapidly spreading rash, eye or mouth involvement, or signs of a serious infection.

How are rashes diagnosed?

Diagnosis depends on appearance, distribution, timing, exposures, medications, symptoms, and medical history. Testing may include skin scraping, culture, patch testing, blood work, or biopsy when needed.

How are rashes treated?

Treatment is directed at the cause and may include moisturizers, topical anti-inflammatory medications, antihistamines, antifungal or antibacterial therapy, medication changes, or systemic treatment for more severe inflammatory disease.
