Red, dry or cracked knuckles are often caused by irritation and hand eczema rather than simple dryness alone. Frequent handwashing, cold weather, low humidity, detergents and repeated wet work can damage the skin barrier and lead to burning, scaling, painful splits or bleeding.
Why are my knuckles red and cracked?
Common triggers include cold air, indoor heating, frequent washing, harsh cleansers, cleaning products and repeated exposure to water. Some people also have allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis or another condition that makes the hands more sensitive.
Is it dry skin or hand eczema?
Hand eczema can cause redness or darker discoloration, scaling, itching, burning, blisters, deep painful cracks, bleeding or weeping. Persistent symptoms often need more than occasional moisturizer because the trigger and inflammation also need to be addressed.
What helps cracked knuckles heal?
- Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle fragrance-free cleanser.
- Apply a thick fragrance-free cream or ointment immediately after washing.
- Use petrolatum or another bland ointment over painful cracks, especially at night.
- Wear protective gloves for dishwashing, cleaning and wet work.
- Protect hands from cold outdoor air.
- Avoid picking, scrubbing or repeatedly reopening cracks.
When should cracked or bleeding knuckles be checked?
Arrange an evaluation if the rash is persistent or recurrent, cracks are deep or painful, the hands are interfering with work or sleep, or you develop oozing, crusting, spreading redness, warmth, swelling or other signs of infection.
For recurrent hand eczema, treatment may include prescription anti-inflammatory medication plus a plan to identify and reduce triggers. See our eczema care or Book Appointment.
