A careful exam helps separate scabies from eczema, insect bites, and other itchy rashes.

How it looks in children

The wrists, finger webs, waist, and other folds may be affected. Infants and young children can also have scalp, face, palm, or sole involvement. Other itchy conditions can look similar, so diagnosis matters.

Treatment needs a household plan

Prescription medicine is needed. The application area and repeat-treatment schedule depend on age and the chosen product. In young children, treatment instructions may include the head and neck; do not assume an adult neck-down regimen is appropriate. Household members and close contacts generally need treatment at the same time.

Clothing and follow-up

Follow instructions for hot washing and drying recently used clothing, towels, and bedding, or bagging items that cannot be washed. Itching may persist for several weeks after successful treatment. New burrows, new bumps, or ongoing symptoms need reassessment. Pus, fever, or painful spreading skin changes need prompt care.

Compare eczema, another cause of itching.
