The internet is excellent at many things. Calmly interpreting a blurry photo of a rash at 2:07 a.m. is not one of them.<\/p>\n

Patients often arrive at dermatology visits having already traveled through an online diagnostic roller coaster: mild irritation, rare infection, autoimmune disease, cancer, back to irritation. Here are five things worth keeping in perspective.<\/p>\n

1. \u201cWhat rash looks exactly like this?\u201d<\/h3>\n

Many unrelated skin conditions can look remarkably similar. Eczema, allergic contact dermatitis, fungal infections, psoriasis, medication reactions, and viral eruptions can overlap visually. Distribution, symptoms, timing, exposures, medications, and examination details often matter as much as the photograph.<\/p>\n

2. \u201cIs this definitely skin cancer?\u201d<\/h3>\n

Photos online are useful for learning warning signs, but they cannot reliably tell you what your particular spot is. Dermatologists use the history, physical examination, dermoscopy, and\u2014when needed\u2014a biopsy to make that determination.<\/p>\n

3. \u201cWhat is the strongest thing I can put on it?\u201d<\/h3>\n

Strong treatment is not always smart treatment. A topical steroid may help one rash and temporarily disguise another. Harsh acne products can worsen rosacea or perioral dermatitis. Antifungals will not fix every circular rash. Diagnosis comes before firepower.<\/p>\n

4. \u201cCan I pop, scrape, freeze, or cut this off myself?\u201d<\/h3>\n

Please do not turn your bathroom into a procedure room. Home manipulation can cause infection, scarring, bleeding, pigment changes, and delayed diagnosis.<\/p>\n

5. \u201cWhat if it is something incredibly rare?\u201d<\/h3>\n

Rare conditions exist. Dermatologists diagnose them. But common things are common, and a focused evaluation is usually more useful than trying to match yourself to the most alarming image on a search page.<\/p>\n
